I am 31 years and got clean on June 5th, 2017. I was born in Little Rock, AK in 1988. I spent my entire life there until God sobered me up and moved me to Birmingham, AL. I started using drugs and alcohol when I was 16 years old. I was exposed to chemical substances at an early age and many of my family members were daily recreational users. If I reflect on why I started, I’d have to answer with a deep desire to be a part of something bigger than me. I felt like I was a part of life at last. I was a quiet, reserved guy, and mind-altering substances brought me out of my shell. In the beginning, drugs and alcohol did for me what I couldn’t do for myself.
Over the next ten years, my addiction progressed to the point where I was no longer in control and I began hurting those I loved to sustain my lifestyle and addiction. I was brought to a turning point in June of 2017. I series a of powerful experiences directed me to certain people and propelled me into a direction unknown to me at the time. I asked for help and accepted the help that was offered.
I arrived in Birmingham in late June and was assigned a sponsor the day I arrived. I worked through the steps in eight months and as a result, my way of living and thinking began to change. The steps gave me a sense of direction and purpose. Everything I have in my life today is because of the relationship I have with God and that was made possible through the twelve steps. I always believed that I had an understanding of God, but it was only through the spirituality of the steps that I learned how to have a relationship with a God of my understanding.
Today I have a relationship with both my parents and my brother. I live in Birmingham and I am an active member of the 12 step fellowships.
