Alcohol Abuse by the numbers
Alcohol is one of the most commonly-abused addictive substances in the
United States and has been for decades. This is not surprising considering
how alcohol is ever-present in modern American culture. From restaurants
and bars to social gatherings, family events, or even work or school functions,
Americans are expected and sometimes encouraged to drink alcohol from
a young age. Because of this “normalizing” of alcohol, it can
be very difficult for a person to identify and admit when they have a
drinking problem.
According to data from the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
- More than 14 million adults struggle with alcohol addiction in the United
States, though only 8% will ever receive treatment. - More than 95,000 people die each year from excessive alcohol abuse. This
translates to roughly 261 deaths per day. - Alcohol is the third-leading cause of preventable death in the United States,
after tobacco and poor diet/exercise. - In 2010 (the last year this statistic was studied), excessive alcohol abuse
cost the United States roughly $249 billion.
Our Approach to Alcohol Addiction Treatment
We approach addiction from the inside. Your treatment plan will
focus on the internal source of your substance abuse issues, and will
help you adjust your thinking to better manage your addiction.
Our faith-based recovery plans are primarily informed by the
12-step approach to addiction treatment. This effective plan will provide a framework for
your path to recovery, and we will supplement this traditional path with
outdoor activities and community support. Our treatment method is an accelerated
version of the traditional 12-step approach that may also involve exercise,
outdoor activities, and group functions. We can tailor the specific path
of your treatment to your unique needs, and ensure you are supported at
every step.
Signs of Alcohol Addiction
Identifying alcohol addictions can be difficult because excessive drinking
is so commonplace. It can be hard to identify when a person drinks more
than the average person, and when a person actually has a problem.
A person may have a legitimate issue with alcohol if, in addition to drinking
excessively, the person chooses to drink over engaging in other activities,
drinks on their own a lot, or suffers from significant medical or financial
problems due to their drinking.
Some other signs of alcohol addiction may include:
- Blacking out
- Alcohol poisoning
- Isolating from friends and family
- Hiding drinking
- Mood swings
- Constantly being drunk or hungover
- Associating with certain people just to drink
Long-Term Effects of Alcohol Addiction
Excessively drinking alcohol can cause significant damage to the internal
organs and body systems. Drinking in general is not healthy, and the behavior
only causes more issues if done in excess and over a long period of time.
The physical effects of long-term alcohol addiction may include:
- Liver damage and cirrhosis
- Kidney failure
- Cancers of the throat, mouth, colon, esophagus, etc.
- High blood pressure
- Heart disease
- Stroke
Drinking excessively can damage the brain as well. A person who drinks
a lot can experience memory loss, confusion, cognitive limitations, impaired
decision making skills, anxiety, depression, and other mental issues.
In addition to the physical effects of alcoholism, excessive drinking can
impact every area of a person’s life. A person who has a long-term
struggle with alcohol addiction may experience financial issues.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Q:What causes alcohol addiction?
A:While the exact cause of alcohol addiction is still unknown, there are a wide range of factors that contribute to a person's risk of developing an alcohol addiction, including family history of alcohol use disorder, having more than 15 drinks per week for men or 12 drinks per week for women, drinking at a young age, and underlying mental health conditions. Other factors that can increase a person's risk of alcohol use disorder include peer pressure, low self-esteem, high stress levels, or living in a culture where alcohol use is common and accepted.
-
Q:Is alcohol rehab covered by insurance?
A:Health insurance plans typically cover alcohol addiction treatment thanks to the Affordable Care Act. Many insurance plans offer coverage for inpatient and outpatient treatment, detox, co-occurring disorder treatment, aftercare, and more. Since every plan is different, it is important to first check with your provider and then speak to our admissions professionals to determine whether our alcohol rehab program is right.
-
Q:Do I really need alcohol treatment?
A:At Impact Recovery Center, we understand that it can be difficult and even daunting to seek help for a drinking problem. You may feel like your relationship with alcohol isn’t an addiction yet or that you can get sober on your own. Rehab is more than just a way to get sober–it’s about overcoming bad habits, learning healthy coping mechanisms, and trying a wide range of therapies that will change your outlook and help you reduce your chances of relapsing. Rehab can be a great benefit to you if alcohol is in any way interfering with your life. Ask yourself, “Do I find myself thinking about alcohol a lot?” “Have I tried to quit drinking before, but couldn’t do so?” “Is my drinking negatively affecting my job or personal relationships?” “Do I drink when I feel lonely or sad?” If you have answered yes to any of these questions, we encourage you to seek treatment.
-
Q:How long is alcohol rehab?
A:Every rehab center offers different programs that vary in length depending on the methodology used, the severity of the addiction being treated, and whether or not there are additional co-occurring mental disorders being treated. Our structured alcohol rehab program at Impact Recovery Center is 42 days long. Our program is designed to help you learn healthy coping mechanisms quickly so you can get back to your life and put what you’ve learned into action.
-
Q:What happens after completing rehab?
A:Recovery from alcohol addiction is a lifelong process that doesn’t end once rehab is completed. Maintaining your sobriety will require forgiveness, patience, hard work, and a dedication to staying on the straight and narrow path. As such, we are proud to offer a variety of aftercare programs to ensure you have the support you need to stay sober after you leave our facility. These include alumni meetings, Saturday cookouts, guest speaking events, and biweekly sponsor nights that foster community and provide the resources you need moving forward.
-
Q:How do I help a loved one with alcoholism?
A:There are few things as painful as seeing a loved one struggle with alcohol dependency. If you have a son, daughter, parent, or other loved one that is in need of alcohol addiction treatment, it is important that you urge them to seek help at our facility. Empathize with them, let them know you are concerned about their wellbeing, and offer your support in any way you can. Depending on the person, they may not realize or acknowledge they have a drinking problem. If they refuse to acknowledge an obvious problem, consider staging an intervention with the assistance of a professional. If they choose to seek treatment at our facility, we encourage you to stay involved in their recovery both during treatment and after they have completed our program.
